Ways to be a green driver and save money too

Becoming a green driver will not only be better for the environment but you will save a small fortune in petrol and maintenance of youcar over the course of a year that you could spend on something else!

Drive a hybrid car – hybrid cars are a relatively new thing to the car market so can still be expensive, ideally save your money now and wait till they become less expensive or wait till more come onto the second hand market. But they are worth saving for, the combination of fuel and electric engine means you get far more mileage for your money, they give off cleaner emissions and are very quiet at slow speeds!

LPG – Liquefied Petroleum Gas, is not only better for the environement but it is also half the cost of petrol, you can either buy an LPG car or get your engine convered and if you live in London you don’t have to pay the congestion charge either. lpg-vehicles.co.uk

Better driving practices – The way you drive also effects your mileage. Sudden starts and quick braking will use more fuel. Sticking to the speed limit will also use less fuel, and try to keep your engine speeds to within 1,200 – 3,000 RPM’s. And try and avoid unnecessary errands in the car that you could perhaps walk or cycle. Read more about good driving practice.

Have a tune up - Getting a regular tune up at the car garage as well as having your air filters cleaned will all help you use less fuel. And make sure your tyres are properly inflated, under inflated tyres use more petrol/diesel too. And tidy up your boot, if you have stuff in there you don’t need take it out, any extra weight will use more fuel too.

Start a carpool – Why not consider doing a lift share with fellow colleagues at your work and split the petrol money, and you never know you might meet some new people at your work. Read more about lift sharing.

Don’t use the air conditioning – Air conditioning uses a LOT of petrol, and considering the UK is cold most of the time do we really need it? On the odd day that we do get any heat park in the shade to stop your car warming up or buy a reflective wind shade to keep the sun out when your not driving.

Start using teleconferencing – With the huge advances in video telecommunication why not start having your meetings at work over the internet instead of meeting up, you won’t need to use any petrol and some teleconferencing software is free – Read article about Skype.
