Selling your car and getting the best value you can for it.

When anyone sells their car, they’re usually hoping to get as much as they can for it, but sometimes it can be hard to do this. There are a few small things that you can do though which will help you to get the most money possible for your car.

Keep it Clean
Make sure you give the car a really thorough clean inside and out. This will make the car look much nicer to prospective buyers than if it’s dirty and full of bits of rubbish and old toys or take away packaging. It’s also worth removing any extras that you might keep in the car like old maps and nodding dogs too as these detract from the neatness of the car. Now keep it like this till it’s sold – you might have someone phone up at short notice wanting to see it after all.

A Quick Touch Up
If the car is has the odd scuff mark or chip in the paintwork or windscreen it may be worth touching these bits up and visiting one of the windscreen places that can be found sometimes in supermarket carparks. These places will often fix chips in the windscreen for free, so you won’t pay anything, and your car will look that much more looked after. If the mats or seat covers are very worn, see if you can pick up replacements cheaply and pop them in, the overall look will be improved a lot.

Photographs
If you’re taking a picture of your car to place in an advert, get as good a shot of the car as you can. Make sure the picture is taken in good light, take it from the front and slightly to one side so the front and side of the car can be seen, and have a pleasing background behind it when you take the picture.

Be Ready
Make sure you keep a list of information about the car by the phone so that if someone rings you and asks questions you can answer them clearly. A bad response could put them off buying it.

Know the Value
Yes wanting the most you can get is great, but be reasonable. It’s no good asking £5000 for a car that’s only worth £1000. www.whatcar.com offers a free valuation guide where you give key details about your car and it’s mileage and they will give you a guide to what it’s current market value is.

  1. Agreed. I passed up a car because the photo had a dirty tissue visible in the photo. The car I chose was dirty (very dirty in fact) but it at least did not have someone elses snot rags wiped all over the front seat. Its ok to have a disgusting car, but not if you’re selling it.
