Moving house can be a testing and stressful time and paying for removal specialists can also be expensive.  Below are a few tips that should help you be more organised and also help you save a few pounds.

Consider your transport options

Label things properly

If you have an entire house to pack up and move you will need to be organised.  It will really help by labelling every box clearly with what contents are inside.  Perhaps number the boxes and keep a list of items written down on a separate sheet.  And when you need the kettle to make that long deserved cup of tea, you will know where to find it without having to rummage through every box.  You might also want to consider colour coordinating labels so that the removal team will know easily which room the box belongs.  This will save them time and if you are paying them by the hour it might even save you a few quid.

Organise it into loads

It is unlikely you will move everything in one load if you have more than one room to move.  Therefore organise your things into groups and start with things that will go upstairs first.  Having to clamber over other boxes to get upstairs will only make the job more difficult.

Pack heavy stuff first

Okay this is common sense but a point that shouldn’t be overlooked.  Make sure you load heavy stuff at the bottom as you don’t want to put your back out loading heavy stuff on top.  Only lift as far as you need to.

Supplies such as marker pens, boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap and thick plastic bags will help you label things correctly and securely move your items and keep them clean and safe in the transition.  You might also want to consider buying string or some type of strapping to securely fasten things down or keep things closed.  Things might get broken if you don’t secure them and allow things to slide around in transport.  By buying enough supplies you can save money in not having to replace expensive poorly packaged belongings that get broken.

Keep Expensive Items with you

If you are using a removal firm, let them move the big and bulky stuff while you keep all your important documents and expensive items such as laptops, cameras and MP3 players with you.  These items can travel in the car with you where it is more secure.
