Driving money saving
1. When you are out driving keep an eye out for fuel prices at the different petrol stations you pass. A penny or couple of pence different can add up to quite a lot if you are filling your tank. Supermarket petrolsations seem to be the cheapest at the moment, because they can afford to bring their fuel prices down to lure you into the shop. There are also some petrol price comparison websites, but I find that they don’t always show all the petrol stations in your area, so you are probably better just doing your own homework.
2. Keep your type pressure pumped up. It is dangerous not to and flat tyres will use around 2.5% more fuel on a journey than properly inflated ones.
3. Carry less weight. Only carry things that you really need on a journey, the extra weight usemore fuel. If you have a roof rack that you don’t use take it off and only put it on the car when you are abour to use it.
4. Don’t use Air Conditioning if you have it. Air Conditioning uses a huge amount of fuel, and opening the window or putting the air vents on will do just as good a job.
5. Drive slower, and stick to the speed limit, not only is it safer but you will use less petrol driving slower, If you break the speed limit and drive at 85mph instead of 70mph you will use an extra half litre of pertol for every 10 miles you drive.
6. Don’t put so much petrol in. A full tank will add weight to your car increasing your fuel consumption, if possible only fill your tank half full.
7. Switch off the engine if you are going to be stationery for a period of time. Small cars use 1.5p of petrol every minute and Larger cars use twice this amount.
8. Try and read the road ahead of you and anticipate the traffic comming up, sharp breaking and accelerating add significantly to fuel consumption.
9. Use your cruise control on the motorway if you have it and set it to 70mph, if you don’t have cruise control don’t go over 70,ph as you will use more fuel to drive faster.
10. Try and avoid rush hour, crawling along stuck in traffic uses lots of fuel.
11. Plan a journey before hand use the http://www.rac.co.uk/ journey planner to print out a route as you will use less fuel when you don’t get lost.
